Traditional industrial noise measurement techniques have limitations

Traditionally, monitoring noise levels from mines, quarries or industrial facilities has been undertaken using a combination of unattended and attended monitoring.

A challenge for many industrial sites is how to
distinguish their sites noise contribution from other
sources such as adjacent industry or nearby road.

Traditional noise measurement techniques have limitations
Unattended monitoring is inaccurate – No certainty what is causing the noise.
Attended monitoring is time consuming – Noise direction can be identified but how long to measure. How often do we hear ‘You should have been here yesterday!’
Short-term attended measurements are unpredictable – Can often get different results from changes in weather and operational activity on a day-to-day basis.
Analysis from attended measurements is subjective – Estimating noise contributions from an industry source within the total noise is a subjective process.

The use of traditional noise monitoring methods to resolve noise complaints, monitor compliance within noise limits and undertake real time noise control have been prone to inaccuracy and can be very time consuming at anti-social hours.

This can result in protracted assessment processes and industry negotiations and ultimately community uncertainty.

BarnOwl® provides accurate real time noise levels and direction

The benefits of BarnOwl®’s noise monitoring method over traditional techniques are:

Quicker and more accurate resolution of noise issues;
Allows industry to improve operational efficiency;
Fairer negotiations between industry and regulators; and
Better outcome for affected communities.

BarnOwl® achieves this by
Providing accurate measurements with true directional monitoring;
Eliminating debate over the subjective nature of attended measurements;
Allowing longer measurement durations which provides accurate consideration of variable conditions (weather and operations);
Providing fully automated and unattended monitoring that reduces the resource overhead associated with attended monitoring; and
Allowing real time noise data to be received and acted on to reduce noise by site operational teams.
